Grid congestion and peak demand: the business reality

More and more grid operators in South Netherlands report congestion: the local grid is full, and a new or heavier connection ends up on a waiting list or gets turned down. At the same time, peak demand from electrical processes, charging points and heat pumps keeps growing, while grid operators increasingly base capacity charges on your actual peak load. That affects businesses in several ways:
- Expansion plans stall because a larger connection isn't available
- The peak power you draw from the grid increasingly determines your connection costs
- Solar panels on the roof produce more than can be used or fed back on sunny days
- A grid operator outage halts operations immediately without backup power
A battery eases all of these at once. By flattening peaks and shifting energy to when you actually need it, you can keep operating within your existing connection, even as your business grows.
What a commercial battery does for you
A commercial battery (C&I storage, for commercial and industrial use) is deployed at the moments it delivers the most value. The automated Energy Management System (EMS) controls the battery based on your consumption pattern, your solar output and current energy prices.
- Peak shaving. The battery absorbs peaks in your consumption, so you stay within your contracted capacity and often avoid an expensive connection upgrade
- Lower capacity charges. A lower peak draw from the grid usually means a lower capacity charge from your grid operator
- Room to grow. Extra charging points, machinery or a heat pump fit more often within your existing connection
- Better use of solar power. Surplus from your solar panels is stored instead of fed back, sometimes at a cost
- Backup power for critical loads. During a grid outage, selected processes, cooling or server rooms keep running
- Flexibility on the energy market. Where your connection and contract allow it, a battery can also capture price differences through the day
Why choose BVo Advies for your battery system?
Advice based on your load profile
We size the capacity and control strategy around your actual load, connection and goals, not a standard package.
Correctly integrated with your installation
Safely wired into your distribution board, matched to your existing or planned solar panels and, where needed, coordinated with your grid operator.
One partner for the whole project
From initial advice and design to installation, commissioning and the installation's periodic inspection.
Ongoing support
Help getting the EMS set up so the battery charges and discharges at the right moments from day one.
Cost of a commercial battery
The cost of a commercial battery depends heavily on the capacity you need, your load profile, and how it's paired with your connection and any solar panels. Where congestion or a capacity problem is looming, the cost usually compares well against a connection upgrade, if one is even available. We're happy to prepare a tailored quote, including an estimate of the expected savings on your capacity charges.
A home battery paired with your solar panels
The same principle works at a smaller scale for homes. Solar panels often produce more on sunny days than is used at that moment, and as the net metering scheme (salderen) is phased out and grid congestion also affects residential feed-in, storing that surplus solar energy yourself becomes more worthwhile than feeding it back. A home battery stores your own solar power and releases it when you need it, controlled by the same kind of energy management system as a commercial battery.
- Payback period typically 4 to 7 years, depending on the model
- Warranty of around 10 years, with a lifespan that can reach 18 to 20 years
- In many cases, VAT on the purchase and installation can be reclaimed if the battery is used to trade energy with your supplier. More information from the Belastingdienst (Dutch)
